Former star all-rounder Yuvraj Singh is ready to mentor the Indian players in future. He wants to help the team to be mentally strong in big tournaments. The Men in Blue lost the ICC World Cup 2023 final to Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium on November 19.
India last won the ICC tournament in the form of Champions Trophy under MS Dhoni’s captaincy in 2013. Their last World Cup win came in 2011 when the host nation thumped Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium.
“We haven’t won any tournament despite playing in a lot of finals. I was a part of the team when we lost to Pakistan in the final of the Champions Trophy in 2017,” Yuvraj said while inaugurating ‘Yuvraj Centres of Excellence’ at Merlin Rise.
“We will have to come up with plans to start winning the title shot matches. India crumble under pressure but look at Australia, they have won 6 ODI World Cups and we have just two titles,” Yuvraj Singh added.
England and Australia defeated India in final of the World Test Championship in 2021 and 2023. The 2015 and 2019 fifty-over World Cups ended in a disappointment as India were eliminated from the semi-finals.
The sub-continent team played in the semis of the ICC T20 World Cup in 2016 and 2022 but failed to cross the hurdle. In 2014, India lost to Sri Lanka in the final of the T20 World Cup.
“We will have to teach our young players about handling pressure. I love mentoring cricketers. I want to give back to cricket. When my kids start going to school, I would love to work with the young Indian players. I know how to be mentally strong as I have been through several challenges in my professional career,” he concluded.
